It's 1885. Wild bison are scarce in the North West Territories. Luther Giddings (Paul Spence), a scout of mixed blood returns to the buffalo ranch where he was born to reunite with his half brother, William Turner (Dave Lawrence). Whiskey floats more trouble than it drowns and before long, he is on the run, the bison rancher's inept outfit on his tail. When Luther discovers that the captive white buffalo has followed him, he vows to return the animal to her people to trigger the return of the Great Herds. With an two thousand pound buffalo and a reluctant brother from another father in tow.

Cavalry Army General Boyd applies that by breaking past treaties with the Apaches, and suppressing them in the territory under his command. A young Apache - named Cuchillo/Knife, after the massacre of his tribe - is taught that he is the gods' send to protect his people. Brought up to be a great warrior, he will attempt to reason with Boyd, and then fight an uneven battle against the Blue Demons.
Marjorie Wayne, the new school-teacher, comes to town and boards at the same ranch where Broncho Billy is foreman. Broncho Billy falls in love with her winsome ways and proposes to her. She tells him she does not love him, but expresses a wish that they be good friends. Her sweetheart from the city comes to the ranch and she marries him, much to the chagrin of Broncho Billy.
With the help of Red Barton (Wade Boteler), Phil (Jack Holt) makes a spectacular escape from jail. He obtains a parson's outfit from a pawnshop and shortly thereafter winds up in a barroom brawl. One of the other brawlers is Chuckwalla Bill (J.P. Lockney), the newly elected mayor of the town of Panamint.
Fairfax, California, is the location used for this film, one of the earliest Broncho Billy films. Anderson includes his usual mix of comedy and drama as Broncho Billy gets caught in the middle of a family dispute between a jealous hotel owner and his daughter when she flirts with her boyfriend, a cowboy her father dislikes.
