Mysterious cowboy Bill Patton (as Bob Norton) arrives, "in the land of the West - on the banks of the Rio Grande," at the "Bar-V" ranch. Ostensibly seeking employment, Mr. Patton is revealed, as the plot unravels, an undercover Texas Ranger. Patton wants to get a job at the "Bar-V", and round-up evidence against newly appointed foreman, and all-around snake-in-the-grass, Jack House (as "Buck" Bailey).

Young cowboy Cyclone Jones falls for pretty Sylvia Billings, who with her sheep-rancher father has just come to town. However, his pursuit of Sylvia runs into some roadblocks, mainly the hostility of the local cattle ranchers to "sheepmen" like her father, whose sheep they believe ravage the range and leave it unusable for their cattle to graze on and who are determined to drive the new arrivals out of town.
Raymond Beahan, a young chap from the city, pays a visit to his uncle, John Purcell, the sheriff. The day after he arrives, he dresses up in his uncle's hat, cartridge belt, chaps, etc., and is about to take an old gun from the wall to put in his belt when his uncle asks him not to take the gun, as he prizes it very highly. He then tells the boy the story of how the gun came into his possession. The story is so vivid to the boy, that when his uncle leaves him to round up some bandits, and he is left alone in the cabin, he falls asleep and dreams the same story his uncle has just related to him, only HE is the hero.

Dee Halloran rescues Grace Macy from a runaway stage and learns that her grandfather was murdered before he could divulge the whereabouts of a large sum of money he had hidden from thieves. Buck Fitzgerald, the leader of a gang of desperadoes, weasels himself into Grace's confidence and leads her to believe that McKeller, a friend of Dee's, was responsible for the murder. Thinking that Grace knows the location of her grandfather's money, Fitzgerald later tries by force to make her talk.

Outlaws Dale and Tucson quit Wolf's gang. Just as the two are about to rob the stage, Wolf and his gang beat them to it. Dale breaks it up saving the money and this gets him appointed Sheriff. But Wolf shows up and threatening to expose Dale, forces him to let his gang rob the express office.
Pa is becoming increasingly crotchety, and has been crabby with Tom and with everyone else on the ranch. Then he gets a letter telling him that a young woman artist is coming to the ranch to sketch some of the scenery. The ranch hands are surprised and amused by the way that Pa's disposition improves as a result. But soon Pa and Tom are involved in a rivalry for the young woman's attention.
Lampião's gang raids a farm just as the wedding of Antônio Saraiva and the Baroness's goddaughter is being prepared. In the shootout, Lampião's brother, Ezequiel, is killed, and in revenge, Lampião burns the Baroness alive and orders the bride to be beaten. Upon arriving at the farm, Antônio discovers everything and vows to follow the gang's footsteps to hell. The cangaceiros continue their atrocities, robbing, killing, and looting, until a priest places a curse on Lampião. The curse transforms into the avenging figure of Antônio, who acquires supernatural powers. He meets Lampião during Maria Bonita's birthday party, and a life-or-death duel ensues.
